It’s mainly due to her experiences during her youth that she holds people within an arm’s length. Nothing goes past the typical polite conversations or doing what’s been asked of her, though that isn’t to say she won’t go out of the way to assist someone who clearly needs it. [break][break] Despite her reservations towards interacting with others, she’s very sensitive to those around her. Be it an extreme form of empathy or her years of understanding her mother’s high emotional walls, Nagisa is able to tell when someone around her is feeling down and will go out of her way to lend an ear. She might hesitate when it comes to true socialization with people but she doesn’t enjoy seeing them struggle. [break][break] It’s not that she doesn’t want interaction. In fact, she craves it more than anything. But she’s found that, alongside her general weariness, it’s easier to keep people at a distance. It’s easier not to make friends than to apologize over and over again for never being able to hang out. [break][break] That being said, Nagisa is an extremely hard worker whose main focus is achieving her dream. This straightforward thinking has proven to work incredibly well in every setting except those that pertain to herself and socially. It’s easy for her to get so consumed by her goal that she forgets to treat herself like a human being. This had led to multiple scoldings by her parents. [break][break] Being someone so engrossed in their work, it’s almost hard to believe Nagisa leaves her head in the clouds as much as she does. Surprisingly, her imagination and creativity is boundless- something that has helped her on several occasions in and out of the ice rink- but for all the good it’s done, it’s also left her longing. Her mind will travel down different paths; ones where she allows herself to open up, ones where she doesn’t work during every free moment, ones where she lives the rose-colored life she desires. It’s when she wakes up from these daydreams that she collects her skates and resorts to a more productive form of escapism; practice. [break][break] The transition from land to ice is clear as day. No matter the piece she performs, there's an overwhelming amount of confidence and charisma that seems to roll off her in waves; something that could only be obtainable through years of constant practice. The energy around her becomes practically palpable- almost like lightning- and there's a fire that burns brightly in her eyes. Everything comes out on the ice: all her pain, all her doubts. The ice and her share a secret every time they meet, and the chances of anyone else joining their exchange is near nonexistent. [attr="class","nodensright1"]SUBJECT BACKGROUND [attr="class","nodensright21"] [attr="class","nodensright22"] I. [break][break] Her creation had been the product of one night between a visiting American man and a rebellious Kaibara-native. Junko handled the sudden pregnancy as well as any other teenage girl. That is to say, she handled it poorly. Their fleeting affair was intended to be just that: fleeting. Nothing more than a moment to share with her friends in hopes of making them jealous. The thought of that brief moment turning into a lifelong sentence made her shake. Junko had done many things in the past, but none of their consequences came close to instilling the fear she felt then. [break][break] It goes without saying that her parents were furious. They refused her wish to terminate the pregnancy. Junko would miss her high school graduation on account of her daughter’s birth. Her friends visited after the ceremony. They cooed and complemented the sleeping baby, but their words had been unheard by the new mother. Junko wouldn’t hold the child until they were released from the hospital. With her parents rejecting her from their home and her friends unable to provide proper help, mother and child were forced to move. [break][break] II. [break][break] Nagisa wouldn’t call the children at her school ‘mean’. Even when they made fun of her eyes and called her mother foul names, she couldn’t call them mean. She could, however, throw rocks and punch them until they stopped. [break][break] The staff at her school knew Junko well. It was the same song and dance every time: “Nagisa-chan, do you know why we called your mother here today?”, “You can tell the teachers when they tease you and they will handle it”, “Please don’t do this again, okay?”. [break][break] The other mothers would gossip while their backs were turned. It was clear why they believed the little green-eyed [break][break] “Listen kid, you don’t hafta fight every time some punk opens their mouth.” It was hypocritical coming from Junko and Nagisa knew it, even if she didn’t know what the word ‘hypocritical’ meant at that moment. [break][break] III. [break][break] They recommended sports to help release the anger. Swimming, Judo, Kendo, and even the overseas sports like Baseball and Soccer; Nagisa did it all, and she was damn good. Of course it only made sense, she devoted every free moment to practicing. Her classmates would give their praise at the end of every match, but their words meant nothing to her. Those sports were fun, but they didn’t matter. They weren’t the one her mother watched with wistful eyes and a dreamy smile. It was unfortunate for Nagisa, as it had been the sport that gave her the most trouble. [break][break] Skating. [break][break] All sports had been dropped in favor of skating during her third year of elementary school. She refused to be beat, so it was with every fall Nagisa picked herself back up with more determination than before. Her mother would smile at her like she did at their crappy television set. Even if she became black and blue in the process, Nagisa was unwavering in her goal. It was during her fifth year that she entered her first competition. Her mother didn’t smile, but there was something akin to pride in her eyes. It was a start. [break][break] IV. [break][break] Junko was young, beautiful, and a hard worker. It stood to reason someone would eventually notice all of these things. [break][break] Nagisa became an older sister during her second year of middle school. She had a father not too long afterwards. It was a feeling the young teen had never experienced before, and the unfamiliarity of it all caused her to close herself off. But the man- her ‘father’- had only shown her kindness and patience. Her sibling always reached out for her with their chubby little hands. Every smile by the man, every “‘Una!” that left the baby, broke her down with each passing day. [break][break] The confusing emotions slowly became replaced by those she could identify. The air at home changed then. It was warm. It was comfortable. It was safe. And she became genuinely happy. [break][break] Competitions weren’t always won, but medals and trophies began to build up little by little. It became a family event: her mother would help her get ready, her father would record her performance and present her with flowers, and her sibling would happily shriek when Nagisa appeared on the ice. The overwhelming joy she felt was only rivaled by the suddenness of their move. It was unexpected, but welcomed. The memories of her anger hovered over her head every time she entered school, and she was desperate to start again. [break][break] V. [break][break] Kaibara wasn’t the town they were supposed to move to, but that’s where they ended up. Her grandparents refused to meet with their daughter, her new husband, and their grandchildren. Junko remarked how some things never changed. [break][break] While her father acted as a guidance counselor to the private boy’s academy, her mother found work at Kaibara’s local clinic. Her younger sibling made their first friend, and Nagisa acquired her third part-time job. [break][break] “You don’t have to get so many jobs, Suna, we can support your college tuition.” [break][break] It made her mother overjoyed to be able to say those words and mean it, but it wasn’t something Nagisa allowed herself to accept. She wouldn’t allow herself to be a burden to her parents any longer than required. In truth, Nagisa desired a rose-colored high school experience. She achieved her goal in her most recent competition, but it was addicting. Trying to reach her mother’s pride fueled her back then, but there were two new faces that watched now. [break][break] When she saw their bright eyes, she made herself a new dream. The weight of that would fall on her shoulders and hers alone. She would give her family, especially her mother, everything they deserved. If that meant sacrificing her first chance at a carefree high school life, then so be it. Besides, according to her mother, nothing exciting ever happened in Kaibara. Her part-time jobs and constant practices were doing her a service by keeping her busy. It wasn’t like something was just going to start happening now, right? |
