Sure, at first he seems easy enough to figure out, quite easily coming off as a rather lax and outright stupid man, living in his own world where he gets to always go with whatever silly idea pops into his mind. It doesn’t help that he doesn’t seem to be willing to treat others, himself, or anything else around him seriously, always seeming to be ready to joke around or go with another one of his “brilliant” ideas. [break][break] But, as you see him more you start to notice that he’s a lot more aware of his surroundings, missing very few things, and shows a sharp intellect. This is found more often than not with him giving his own opinion uncensored and uncaring of the recipient's feelings, more often than not being brutally blunt and completely lacking in any politeness. Though you can certainly also see a more flattering side of him with his knack for machines, which he’s tinkering with quite often as a hobby. [break][break] That keen mind of his is hard to notice though, so it’s no wonder why plenty of people would simply dismiss him as a self-centered idiot with no worries. And, to be fair, they are right to a certain point. He does, however, have his share of kindness in him, being someone who’s willing to lend an ear and give you impartial help and opinion on it, or simply drag you along with one of his ideas and joke around with you. [attr="class","nodensright1"]SUBJECT BACKGROUND [attr="class","nodensright21"] [attr="class","nodensright22"] Tarou Yamada [Japanese equivalent of John Doe], most likely named by his parents as a joke he’d guess, was a child in Kaibara who had trouble finding his own individuality due to controlling parents. His parents had a lot of expectations for their son, due to which they at every point were there to tell him what to do and what he should be interested in. They wanted him to succeed, so they had him study, instead of finding friends, playing, or even discovering interests. This caused the boy to not really understand himself, from what he liked to what he wanted to do with his life, as well as become isolated from his peers and it was something that stuck with him for a long time. [break][break] Even in high school, which is considered the prime of life for many Japanese, at least when it comes to social life, Tarou was still simply concentrating on his studies like his parents wanted him to, with the teen turning down always any offers from classmates even slightly interested in spending time with him for whatever reason. This, once again, caused him to become isolated from his peers, and he spent his first year of high school alone. [break][break] This and his puberty combined triggered a small sense of discomfort in him. He wasn’t at the time sure why it was, but he certainly did feel empty and started to think about himself as a person on his own. It didn’t change much, however. [break][break] On his second year of high school, when his class was making preparations for the cultural festival, a can of white paint fell on the teen’s head, knocking him out and leaving him bleached white. He’d wake up twenty minutes later, finding himself on a bed in the nurse’s office, his uniform ruined and hair almost completely white. He was then greeted by the school nurse Fujiyama, a grumpy looking middle-aged man, who didn’t look the part of a school nurse the least bit with his face reminiscent of a yakuza thug. [break][break] Fujiyama checked up on Tarou, making sure that the boy was fine while joking that white hair looked good on him. As he deemed the student to be fine, he was almost ready to let him go but ended up stopping Tarou from leaving, saying how he didn’t have the sort of look in his eyes that a high school student having. “Empty of any youth”, he said, something which Tarou didn’t understand at all. Using that as an excuse, he had the boy sit down and talk about himself, wanting to figure out if something was troubling him. The two had a long talk, and Fujiyama simply sighed at hearing what Tarou’s life has been like and told the boy that he’ll teach him how to enjoy himself. For the first time, the teen was baffled and it came out in a flabbergasted “HUH?!” [break][break] And so began a year of Fujiyama dragging Tarou around, going with whatever idea popped into the mind of the man to have the teen try out, while also encouraging him to say what he would be interested in trying out. At first simply going along due to the pressure, slowly, but surely, Fujiyama’s plan started to work on Tarou and the student began to say more and more what he wanted to try. With this, the boy started to find out about himself, from his wants and needs to wishes, breaking out of the shell of restraint that had been put on him by his parents. Good example of this was his decision to have his hair bleached white, and keep it so for the rest of his life. [break][break] Of course, his parents weren’t exactly pleased with their son’s priorities becoming disconnected from theirs, him being more interested in things other than studying, a small confrontation happened. With plenty of time and Fujiyama’s wise words of “fuck ‘em” in his heart, Tarou was able to convince his parents to willingly give him freedom of choice as long as he would still provide results in school. He also started to work part-time, just to be sure if the worst were to happen, be it through him failing or when his parents were to find out he wasn’t going to apply to the college his parents wanted him to. [break][break] At the end of his third year, Tarou Yamada was a completely different person, someone with friends, hobbies, and individuality. The whole time he had kept on hanging out with Fujiyama, as well, but when graduation day came he had come to visit the nurse’s office for a goodbye. Tarou, with a deep bow and first tears in years, thanked the school nurse, Fujiyama, his first friend, for everything and said he wanted to become a lot like him. The nurse, desperate to hide his own embarrassment and tears of an old sentimental fool, simply laughed off such a declaration and told the young man before him that no thanks were necessary. And so, they said their goodbyes and the student headed towards his future. [break][break] Tarou saying he wanted to be like Fujiyama was more literal than the nurse could’ve guessed, as he applied through a university fit to be his first step in his goal to become a high school nurse. [break][break] Years later, Tarou Yamada returned to Kaibara, having gotten a job as the nurse for the city’s high school, having gotten the job of his role model Fujiyama after the man had just recently retired. So, he started his job and would quickly establish himself as part of the school as an incredibly strange nurse, who does give some good advice every now and then if you ask him. [break][break] To this day not much has changed and Tarou spends his days how he wants to while still working at the high school’s nurse, despite him getting a stern scolding for his behavior.
